Several analysts have noted the timing of this statement which many consider an indirect remark on the political controversy in the country following revelations in the Panama Papers. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was mid-air after departing from the UK when the statement was made.
The Army Chief also said that terrorism was strongly co-related with corruption and that the war against terror cannot be won unless the menace of corruption is uprooted.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan said that the whole nation stood with the Army Chief. He said his party had been saying the same thing since the last twenty years.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also welcomed the statement of the Army Chief. Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto said that that accountability was used against specific individuals and called for enactment of the law.
