Asia Cup: Dhoni doubtful for opener after suffering injury

DHAKA: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni suffered a muscle spasm during a training session ahead of the team’s Asia Cup Twenty20 campaign.

According to an Indian news website, Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Anurag Thakur said in a statement that Dhoni suffered a muscle spasm.

The extent of the injury has not yet been determined and the Indian skipper may miss the first match of the tournament against Bangladesh. The cricketing board has called Parthiv Patel as the back-up wicket keeper for the tournament.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Parthiv Patel as the back-up wicket-keeper for the upcoming Asia Cup, 2016. He will join the team in Dhaka at the earliest.”

Patel last represented India in 2012 against Sri Lanka in a tri-series in Australia.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also missed the training session. Sources said that the pacer was advised rest by the official.
