KARACHI: The Sindh Wildlife Department has foiled a bid to illegally smuggle 148 black scorpions to Hong Kong from Karachi.

The SWD conducted an operation at Jinnah International Airport as the smugglers were all set to smuggle the scorpions through export cargo.

According to Sindh Wildlife inspector Mukthiar Soomro, there is no exact idea about the cost and purpose of the smuggling attempt, but he added that scorpions are used for medicinal purposes.

He mentioned that the confiscated scorpions will be released in the desert such as Cholistan after legal process was completed.

Why black scorpions are so much in demand?

According to one report, scorpions are in high demand for researchers from the US and EU for the venom they possess, which can be used as an ingredient to develop compounds for anti-cancer medicines.

Al Jazeera English reported that a black scorpion weighing 60 grams can bring in $50,000 or more.
