India is one of the largest democracies in the world (if not the largest) and has often made headlines for being a hotbed for rape incidents. After the Jyoti Singh incident of 2012 in which six men gang-raped an Indian medical student on a bus and left her for dead, the nation has been conscious about the crime.

However, most recently, a Bollywood co-director by the name of Mahmood Farooqui, has been in hot water after being accused of raping a 35 year-old American woman. As per the allegations leveled by the complainant, Mahmood had allegedly ‘forced himself’ on the woman after she had sought his help on a thesis project that she was doing.

Farooqui suffered another setback on Tuesday when a mutual friend of the American woman and the Farooqui named Danish Hussain, gave the statement in court that that the woman sent him a mobile text message saying that she was sexually assaulted by the filmmaker. He gave the statement in front of the judge Sanjiv Jain. Danish Hussain’s testimony was included as a prosecution witness in the rape case.

Mahmood Farooqui is most famous for co-directing the Aamir Khan satirical film Peepli Live. He has been in police custody since June 20 and was chargesheeted in July. The American woman who claims of being raped by him, is a PhD student from the University of Columbia.

Farooqui’s wife has come to the aid of her husband in the past and stated that the charges against her husband were “manipulated and false”.

“We are determined to fight this till the reality is presented before the people,” she had said in a statement.

Whether or not the Bollywood personality is found guilty, one thing is for sure; his image has suffered immense disrepute.
