Dr Adib Rizvi honoured by American College of Surgeons

KARACHI: The prestigious American College of Surgeons has conferred honorary fellowship to Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation’s (SIUT) Dr Adib Rizvi for his notable services in surgical sciences, public services apart from pioneering a transplant movement in the country.

With the honorary fellowship, Dr Rizvi is now part of an exclusive group of international surgeons, extremely skilled and a reason of pride for their countries.

The honorary fellowship was conferred to Dr Rizvi at the yearly meeting of the college held in Washington D.C. United States, said an official of the institute on Saturday.

President College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, Professor Zafarullah Chaudhry was also present in the ceremony.

The official explained that this year honorary fellowships were awarded to five well-known surgeons from across the world, who through their remarkable contributions stood out in their respective branches of surgery.

Besides Dr Rizvi, honorary fellowships were distributed to surgeons from Australia, Colombia, France and Japan.

The American College of Surgeons, in its citation, appreciated services humbly rendered by Dr Rizvi by setting up SIUT in Karachi providing state-of-the-art medical treatment for the people at zero cost.

It was due to the efforts of Dr Rizvi, SIUT remains one of the rising urological and transplant centres in the region, said the college and lauded his role in bringing a legislation to prohibit commercial transplantation in Pakistan.

The American College of Surgeons, created in 1903, is the largest professional organisation of surgeons in the world with some 80,000 members.

Every year the college give away honorary fellowships to famous international surgeons through a highly selective process pushing the number of deserving surgeons to 445 till date.
