During a press conference after attending a meeting headed by prime minister, Nisar maintained that the verification process, initiated last month by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), will see cases registered against foreigners holding fake NICs from August 31.

“At least four foreigners informed NADRA about their fake NIC and surrendered their Pakistani citizenship,” said Nisar.

The interior minister claimed that the helpline formed in this regard, received more than 37000 complaints, at least 22000 fake NICs were discovered while 2000 were suspended.

“Almost 80 million SIMS were suspended,” the minister added.

Terming the issue “a matter of national security”, Nisar claimed that people availed fake NICs with the help of some black sheep within NADRA.  He expressed hope that the verification process will finish within next five months.

Cost of Karachi operation

About the ongoing operation in Karachi and the powers extended to Rangers, Nisar maintained that the operation is a agreed-upon activity.

“31 law enforcers sacrificed their lives, 89 others were injured during the operation,” said Nisar.

“In past few days, two of our brave army men were gunned down in Karachi, a Rangers man was killed in Larkana and still we have no clue, which group is behind these activities,” Nisar said, apparently criticising the Sindh government.

Nisar maintained that the provincia government should not allow the issue of Rangers’ powers and presence in Sindh to turn into a political game.

“I am hopeful that this issue (of extending powers to Rangers) will not turn into a political issue in future,” said Nisar.
