IHC orders “treason case to proceed only against Musharraf”

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday ordered that treason case trial will only proceed against the ex-president Pervez Musharraf, ARY News reported.

The special court nullified the verdict of November 21, 2014 in which the federal government was directed to resubmit its complaint in the treason case after including the names of former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, federal minister Zahid Hamid who was law minister at the time and former chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar to the charge-sheet.

The decision was announced in response to petitions filed separately by Shaukat Aziz, Zahid Hamid and Abdul Hameed Dogar against the order of the special court announced in November 2014.

The court ordered the federal government to constitute a joint investigation committee and probe the case with abettors of the ex-president. Those who turn out to be guilty after investigation should be dealt under the law, said the court.

The IHC said the bench will subsequently conduct trial of the former president in treason case in light of the new verdict.

Musharraf had also demanded that the civilian leadership and the military authorities that allegedly abetted in the imposition of the November 3, 2007 emergency should also be tried along with him.
