Donald Trump is known to be a controversial figure and disliked by most world leaders, owing to his brash and ludicrous statements. London’s first ever Muslim Mayor stated that he hoped Donald Trump would not win the US Presidential elections 2016 since his policies were divisive.
“A choice of somebody who is trying to divide, not just your communities in America but who is trying to divide America from the rest of the world. And I think that, you know, that’s not the America that I know and love,” he said. I”‘m hoping he’s not the guy that wins,” he added.
Trump had earlier called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States of America, stated that he would make an exception for Sadiq Khan. The sttaement drew a sharp response from Sadiq, who stated that he was not exceptional and said that the message given through an act such as this would be harmful. He also went on to say that Trump ‘doesn’t get the history of America’.
Sadiq Khan dismissed Trump’s views and said that by providing the image that Muslims and the West could not survive together, was itself playing into the hands of extremist who want to fan hatred.
“By giving the impression that Islam and the West are incompatible, you are playing into the hands of the extremists,” he said. “It is possible to be a Muslim and to live in the West. It is possible to be a Muslim and to love America,” he added.
Sadiq Khan was crystal clear in his stance of supporting Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in her upcoming fight for the White House berth against Donald Trump. Khan was of the view that Clinton’s win would send an extremely motivating message to girls around the globe, including his own two daughters.
“Just imagine the message it sends to my daughters and to girls around the world that the president of the United States is a woman. Not any old woman, a woman with the gravitas, with the experience, someone who is a unifier,” he said. “I’m quite clear in my mind who I want to be the president of the USA,” he added.
