Karachi’s cleanliness drive hits snags

According to details, two companies removing garbage and involved in cleaning work in the city have warned that they will stop the work as Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has failed to pay their dues.

The city corporation is not being able to pay its dues to the cleaning companies due to financial constraints, sources said.

It is also being said that garbage is being dumped at two landfill sites at Jam Chakro and Gond Pass but the vehicles carrying garbage not being provided fuel neither any arrangement has been made for the maintenance of the machinery used in the work.

According to the KMC sources a letter has been written to the provincial government seeking required funds for onward payment to the cleaning companies. The letter said that the province will suffer losses worth millions of rupees and the city will be turned into a garbage dump in case of failure to pay arrears.

The sources said that KMC already facing acute financial crisis and could not pay staggering arrears of 200 million rupees payable to these companies.
