The incident took place in the city’s famous Paan Mandi behind City Court building where a shop owner found his shop locked with a small slip attached to it. The chit threatened the trader of dire consequences if he breaks the lock without paying the demanded extortion.

The extortion demanding parchment reportedly read “Keh do sb ka Baap agaya hai, taala kholne ki koshish ki to anjaam bura hoga” (Announce that everyone’s daddy has arrived- If you try to break this lock- the result will be dangerous).

The open threat sent anger waves across the trader community of the largest betel leaf market in the country and they resorted to protest.

Hearing about the episode of lawlessness, police reached the spot and assured the traders of security and protection from the terrorists.

Traders across the city have complained time and again about such incidents being rampant in Karachi despite an ongoing operation in the city by law enforcement agencies which claim to have nabbed thousands of extortionists, target killers and other criminals since the start of operation.
