MQM sit-ins begin at major thoroughfares of Karachi

KARACHI: In protest against what it described as unlawful arrest of its party workers and oppressive attitude of law enforcement agencies towards the party, Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) has begun sit-in at more than 10 major arteries of the city, ARY News reported.

Rangers conducted a raid at MQM sector office on late Wednesday night in Scheme-33, Gulshan-e-Maymar and arrested over 30 workers who were holding a meeting at the office.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain announced on late Wednesday night that party will stage sit-ins across the city to ensure release of its party workers who were unlawfully arrested by the Rangers the same night.

MQM has started sit-ins at locations including Numaish, M.A. Jinnah Road, Liaquatabad, Nata Khan bridge, Nagan Chowrangi, Korangi Crossing, Five Star Chowrangi (North Nazimabad), Landhi no.6, Gulshan Chowrangi, Hassan Square and Rashid Minhas Road.

Massive traffic jams were witnessed from the dawn across major thoroughfares of the city as office-goers as well as large number of vehicles were stranded, especially at Numaish Chowrangi due to closure of the road.

Senior MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said the oppressive attitude against the party should be stopped. He said the action of Rangers was condemnable last night.

He said innocent workers of MQM were being arrested for no reason.

Rizvi said it was the right of MQM to protest across the city for being subjected to suppression by some forces.
