Mumbai-style attacks thwarted in Islamabad, claims IG Yasin

ISLAMABAD: Inspector-General Islamabad Tariq Masood Yasin has claimed to have prevented a Mumbai-style attack on the federal capital in the first week of June. He was briefing the Senate Committee on Interior where he made the claims.

Earlier the committee headed by Senator Rehman Malik was being briefed about the Islamabad Safe City Project.  They were apprised that there were 1850 cameras at all entry and exit points of the city, which can identify people and cars and inform the control room. It can also identify suspected packages and baggage and an gathering of more than ten people.

The project has the ability has keep records of more than ten thousand people at any given time, and all blacklisted individuals wanted in criminal cases can be easily identified. The much-delayed project was inaugurated last month by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and has been completed with Chinese assistance.

IG Islamabad also said that they have prepared around 25 smart police cars which are equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance system and are used for monitoring purposes. While giving further details, he said the Safe City Project had helped prevent a Mumbai-style attack in Islamabad.
