Unlike other players who were given the chance, Strauss mostly picked cricketers he himself played with including England’s Alaistar Cook, Marcus Trescothick and Australia’s  Justin Langer, who he said advised him about what he should do to make it to international cricket.

Naming the three as his top batsman, Strauss said that he would pick Jacques Kallis, Indian great Sachin Tendulkar and his ‘hero’ Brian Lara to make up his middle order.

Like many others, Strauss too picked Australia’s Adam Gilchrist as his wicket-keeper.

“The keeper by which all other keepers are measured,” said Strauss about Gilchrist.

Terming him the ‘primary spin bowler of all time’, the cricketer picked Australia’s legendary spinner Shane Warne as his spin bowler.

The first fast bowler he picked was Morne Morkel (South Africa) and the second Glenn McGrath (Australia), someone he described as ‘an impossible bowler to get on top of’.

At number 11, Strauss picked Shoaib Akhtar and showered praise on the Pakistani great as the quickest bowler he had faced.

“Bowling 95mph and swinging into the left-hander, absolute nightmare, hated facing him, has to be in my team,”
