Sartaj Aziz also said that when the time comes, Pakistan will play a mediator’s role in the Saudi-Iran relations. He issued these statements while speaking to media personnel, in the presence of Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed. Aziz also said that terrorists and extremists could take advantage of the worsening ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

He also stated that safeguarding Pakistan’s interests was the government’s top priority. Sartaj also stated his view that the issue should not be further escalated since at the right time, Pakistan would have to play the mediator’s role. He said that it was Pakistan’s wish that Saudi Arabia and Iran resume normal ties with each other.

Speaking on the Pathankot incident, Sartaj Aziz revealed that talks would be held according to schedule and that Pakistan was investigating the Pathankot attack.

Sartaj Aziz’s statement comes after Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Juberi came to Pakistan on a two-day visit. During his visit, he met with senior officials of the military and civilian leadership, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief General Raheel Sharif.

During the Saudi Foreign Minister’s visit, Pakistan’s role as part of the 34-state military alliance was discussed. Also, Pakistan’s role in the recent escalating Saudi Arabia-Iran tensions was also deliberated by both sides.
