PEMRA suspends Geo News licence for 15 days

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) suspended the license of Geo News for 15 days on Friday on the complaints by Defence Ministry, ARY News reports.

The decision to suspend the license of the news channel was taken in a meeting of PEMRA. Acting Chairman Pervez Rathore, Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Information Secretary were present. Only government members were present in the PEMRA session today.

PEMRA has also ordered the news channel to pay a fine of Rs. 10 million. The ban will be enforced after an official notification is issued.

Geo News had blamed Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Zaheer-ul-Islam for the attack on anchor Hamid Mir. The allegations had caused wide-spread protests in the country in favor of the Pakistan Army and ISI.
