PESHAWAR: 15 killed, 30 injured in bomb attack–KP Information Minister

According to details, a bomb exploded inside a bus, killing as many as 15 people and injuring more than 30 others. As per the Information Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the targeted bus was carrying government employees belonging to the Secretariat. The bomb blast took place at the city’s busy Sadar area on the Sunehri Masjid road. The multiple injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital for medical treatment. Some of the patients were also shifted to the Cantonment Hospital. The bus had been completely decimated as all injured had been taken out of the vehicle.

According to further information shared by the police, the bus was carrying government employees from Charsadda to Peshawar. It had begun its course from Dargai and was on its way to the Secretariat when the blast took place outside the main gate of Sunehri Masjid. The intensity of the blast could not be ascertained however LEA officials said the blast had taken place due to an IED detonating inside the bus which had been purposely planted there. The bus was filled with people and had been attacked while it had stopped at a bus stop to offload passengers. The intensity of the blast threw the bus thirty to forty feet away from where the blast had taken place.

Dr Subhani, DMS of the Lady Reading Hispital, revealed 26 injured had been brought to the Lady Reading Hospital. He also confirmed three women and one child were among the injured that had been brought in for treatment.

Our correspondent from the area confirmed that the bomb blast took place at a busy street where a nearby police station and a girl school is located. Hospital sources claimed that the injured who were brought in were in critical condition since they were suffering from head, leg and spinal cord injuries.

Speaking to media personnel, Information Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mushtaq Ghani said that 15 people were killed and more than 30 had been injured in today’s attack. He said that investigation regarding the bomb blast was in its initial stages and that police had reached the scene of the crime as soon as they could. He said that as per the directives of the Chief Minister, best medical care available was being provided to the injured. He also said that emergency was declared in all major hospitals of KP to deal with the alarming situation.

IED had been planted under a seat: SSP

An SSP officer confirmed that the IED which had caused the explosion had been planted under a seat. He also disclosed that sniffer dogs had been brought in and the bus had been checked thoroughly for any more explosives. SSP Majeed also said that people had been kept away from the scene of the blast in order to avoid another potential attack.

The SSP also stated that law enforcement agencies were gathering evidence from the scene of the crime and that the intensity of the blast could not be ascertained as of yet.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemns Peshawar bus blast

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also condemned the incident and issued directives to provide the best medical treatment available to the injured. He also said that terrorists would be brought to justice for their nefarious activities.

“Cowardly acts of terrorists can’t deter our resolve to wipe out terrorism,” he said.

AFP adds:-

Bomb disposal officials said that it was a four kilogram (8.8 pound) Improvised Explosive Device (IED) fitted with a remote control detonator and planted near the bus’s gas cylinder, amplifying the blast.
Talking to reporters at the site, Abbas Majid Marwat, another senior police official, said that the bus was transporting government employees from the north-western town of Mardan to Peshawar.
Rescue workers at the site were seen taking the injured from the blue bus and carrying them out on stretchers to waiting ambulances.
Other injured were scattered near the site and some were picked up by rescue workers on their shoulders.
