PIA conversion bill finally sails through parliament

ISLAMABAD: The bill to convert Pakistan International Airline (PIA) into a public limited company was adopted in the joint sitting of parliament today, ARY News reported.

Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid presented before the House reports of ten-member committee on “The Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (Conversion) Bill, 2016.”

The bill sailed through the parliament without any objection being raised by the opposition after National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq had constituted a committee to settle the PIA bill issue amicably.

PPP had also decided to extend its support to the government in passing the PIA bill after repeated opposition to the legislation.

The decision in this regard was taken in the PPP’s Parliamentary Committee meeting held here at Parliament House on Monday under the chair of Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had also assured during his parliamentary speech that all administrative actions against PIA employees would be withdrawn by tomorrow.

The Senate on March 4 had rejected the bill to convert PIA into a public limited company.
