PM Nawaz vows to resolve power crisis by 2018

According to Radio Pakistan, PM Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the cabinet committee on energy at Prime Minister House. He emphasized that all steps should be taken to resolve the energy crisis within the next two years.

He said that the deadline for resolving the power crisis must be met.

In the meeting, chairman of Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Lt. Gen Muzammil Hussain briefed the committee on the Neelum-Jhelum HydroPower Project and Tarbela-IV extension project.

The WAPDA chairman said that the Neelum Jhelum project will be completed within the scheduled time. He stated that the first unit of the hydropower project would be commissioned by February 2018, whereas the rest will be operative by the summer of 2018.

Water and Power Secretary, briefing the meeting, said that the coal based energy projects and clean energy projects will generate significant amount of electricity to grid in 2017.

He also said that the construction of the Liquefied Natural Gas-based power project at Bhikki will be completed ahead of the scheduled time.

The secretary informed the prime minister that nearly 3000 MWs power generation will be surplus by May 2018.
