Polls for mayor and deputy mayor being delayed, says Sattar

KARACHI: Dr. Farooq Sattar of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has said that the elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor are being delayed, ARY News reported.

Dr. Farooq Sattar, speaking at a press conference on Sunday, said that the provincial minister for local government is interfering in the municipal affairs.

“Local government is only on paper..not in practice”, Sattar said.

The MQM leader also criticized the provincial government of not transferring powers to the grass root level and not announcing the election schedule for the posts of mayor and deputy mayors.

He announced a protest against the delay in the announcing of election schedule for the position of mayor and deputy mayor after which the Election Commission of Pakistan issued a notification regarding the oath taking of the newly elected representatives.

ECP has blamed Sindh Government for the delay in the announcing of election schedule.

According to the notification, the newly elected local bodies representatives will take oath on Thursday.
