Makhdoom Amin Fahim laid to rest in Hala

Amin Fahim passed away due to cancer at the age of seventy-six. Funeral prayers of the deceased PPP leader were offered after Asr prayers in his native city Hala, which were attended by senior politicians, relatives and a large number of general people.

He was laid to rest amid tears and sobs.

Soon after his demise, condolence messages from fellow party leaders and supporters started pouring in.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim had went abroad for treatment of blood cancer, but had recently returned to the country via an air ambulance. He was hospitalized in Karachi at a private hospital and was said to be in critical condition.

Amin Fahim was a veteran politician and one of the most seasoned politicians from the PPP’s cadre. From 1977 to 2013, Amin Fahim became a Member of the National Assembly 8 times. He was also the spiritual leader of the Sarwari Jamaat.

Amin Fahim was born on 4 August, 1939 in Sindh’s city of Hala. He belonged to an influential family of Sindh. His father Makhdoom Muhammad Zaman Talib-ul-Mola was the custodian of the spiritual seat of Makhdoom Nooh shrine in Hala. Amin Fahim was one of the closest confidants of ex-Prime Minister and slain PPP leader Benazir Bhutto. He was Benazir’s key advisor during General Musharraf’s era, when Benazir had left the country and was living in a self-imposed exile. He remained chairman of Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarians.

Amin Fahim was a product of Pakistan’s democratic system and among the most senior politicians of the PPP. He first became a Member of the National Assembly during 70s in the last century and was elected to the Parliament for eight times. According to hearsay, when General Musharraf had seized power from Nawaz Sharif, Amin Fahim was offered the slot of Prime Minister by the military ruler but Fahim had declined to accept the offer.

During the PPP’s different stints in power, Amin Fahim held several Federal Ministerial positions. in 2008, he was appointed as the Federal Minister of Commerce.
