The incidents of taking bribes by police personnel have risen in Punjab, specially Lahore. There are some incidents which have been reported by media, while a large number of other incidents of taking bribe have gone underreported.
Following week, two Sherakot police personnel demanded Rs40, 000 from a woman at Babu Sabu checkpost on motorway. Both the police personnel were suspended and sent to jail on indication of ARY News report. The next day SHO Shafiqabad was arrested for taking bribe publicly.
In another incident, SHO Faisal Town Asad Abbas had demanded money from Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader Yousuf Ahmed Malik’s guard and on refusal to give money the SHO registered a case against the guard for allegedly carrying weapons without license. Court had dismissed the case and ordered to take action against the police officer.
Hundreds and thousands of such incidents go underreported, consequently forcing citizens to face humiliation. The security guards of public are becoming their enemies. The Punjab government has failed to stop inflation and corruption along police’s misusing of powers.
