SC seeks ECP notification for countrywide LB polls

TOP NEWS

A three-member bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja heard the case on Tuesday, during which the apex court sought the notification of conducting LB elections all over the country.

While hearing the contempt notice case against the prime minister for not holding LB polls in cantonment board areas countrywide, Justice Khawaja remarked that the non-implementation of the SC verdict is itself enough to issue a contempt notice.

He said that it has been 17 years that LB polls have not been held in cantonments across the country.

The attorney general, during the hearing, told that an ordinance is ready under which polls will be conducted and it will be implemented within 24 hours after the assembly session concludes.

The ordinance, which was prepared earlier, could not be enforced as the legislative bill was under discussion in the National Assembly.

To which, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja said that he is unable to comprehend the matter and asked the attorney general to present explanation regarding the contempt of court notice.

The petitioner was also absent from the court in today’s hearing, at which Justice Khawaja ordered the petitioner to appear before the court tomorrow and present his stance.

Moreover, he said that a verdict will be announced once the petitioner presents his detailed stance in the contempt notice case tomorrow.
