SC extends deadline for CEC appointment

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan has extended the deadline given to the government for appointing new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Tuesday, ARY News reports.

A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Nasir-ul-Mulk heard the case of CEC appointment today.

Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt, in the hearing, ensured the court that the new Chief Election Commissioner will be appointed by 5th December.

He also informed the apex court about the meeting of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah on Monday in which the matter was discussed.

Butt told the court that serious efforts are being made for appointing a new election commissioner and concensus has nearly reached on the matter.

The court ordered the government to appoint a new CEC till Monday, 8th December.
