Lashker-e-Islam spokesman among 30 militants killed in Tirah

KHYBER AGENCY: At least 30 militants were killed on Wednesday when security forces’ fighter jets bombed their hideouts in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency, a tribal area in the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), ARY News reported.

According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the attacks also destroyed two godowns of militants – full of explosive material.

The spokesman of banned outfit Lashker-e-Islam, Salahuddin Ayubi was also killed in air strikes in remote Tirah Valley, said ISPR.

Pakistan has been battling Islamist groups in its semi-autonomous tribal belt since 2004 after its army entered the region to search for Al-Qaeda fighters who had fled across the border following the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

In June the army began an offensive against militant hideouts in the North Waziristan tribal agency after a bloody raid on Karachi Airport ended faltering peace talks between the government and the Taliban.
