KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday rejected plea of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Faisal Vawda seeking disqualification of Karachi mayor-elect Waseem Akhtar, ARY News reported.

The PTI leader had filed petition in the court and requested it to halt oath-taking ceremony of Akhtar as he was facing criminal charges.

The court turned down his plea, remarking that how Akhtar could be disqualified when no charges proved against him.

Later speaking to media, Vawda claimed that the federal government was partnered with the MQM and ‘playing a game’.

He was of the view that the court didn’t reject his plea.

I am not going step back. I will move forward with the message of accountability for all, said the PTI leader. He said the government was ‘staging all this’ to divert attention from the Panama Papers.

The new mayor Waseem Akhtar and deputy mayor will take oath of their office today.

The oath taking ceremony of the new mayor and deputy mayor, chairmen and deputy chairmen of the local councils of Karachi will be held at the city’s Polo Ground.
