SHC sets aside death sentence of two convicts in Karachi police van firing case

KARACHI: A bench of Sindh High Court on Thursday granted appeal of two convicts against death sentence in police mobile firing case, ARY News reported.

The SHC bench declared the sentence as void and ordered acquittal of the accused Abdul Rasheed and Nasir in the case.

The two accused were arrested after a shootout with police in year 2012.

Two policemen of Arambagh police station were injured in the incident, prosecution lawyer informed the court.

An anti-terrorism court had awarded death sentence to the two accused.

Chakra Goth police van attack

The bail petitions of the accused workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Chakra Goth police van attack case also being heard by a bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC).

Seven policemen were killed and several others were injured when gunmen opened fire on a van carrying policemen in Korangi’s Chakra Goth on August 19, 2011.

Government prosecutor informed the court that another accused of the case has been arrested and preliminary proceedings are in progress.

The bench in the previous hearing of the case directed the Anti-Terrorism Court hearing the case, to conclude the trial within given period.

The prosecutor informed the bench that Kamran Madhuri and other accused have been in jail.

The defence complained delaying tactics of the prosecution in an earlier hearing of the case.
