Sindh Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro had moved the bill.

While speaking on the bill Khuhro said, “The legislation is made to provide mechanism for formally registering Hindu marriages in Sindh. It is the first time that such a law is being passed since the creation of Pakistan.”

The legislation will allow Hindus and Parsis both to register their marriages, or even divorces.

Khuhro said that opposition lawmakers wanted to refer this bill to the standing committee, in order to make modifications in it and also seek opinion of minority stakeholders.  Khuhro said that the assembly has also consulted representatives of the Hindu community on the legislation.

A parliamentary body cleared the Hindu Marriage Bill last week, paving way for regulations on registration of marriage and divorce for the Hindu community in Pakistan.
