Sindh govt-Rangers rift deepens after prosecutor change in Dr Asim case

KARACHI: The Sindh government has appointed Nisar Ahmed as new special public prosecutor in Dr. Asim Hussain case, worsening rift between the provincial government and Pakistan Rangers.

Earlier, Mushtaq Jahangiri was the special prosecutor in Dr. Asim case related to corruption and terror financing.

Deputy Superintendent of Rangers (DSP) Inayatullah Durrani, who was the complainant in the FIR against Dr Hussain, also filed a constitutional petition requesting the Sindh High Court to restrain the provincial government from changing prosecutor Mushtaq Jahangiri.

He said there was ample evidence about the involvement of Dr Hussain in corrupt practices as well as treatment and harbouring of terrorists at his hospital’s branches in Clifton and North Nazimabad.

The petitioner alleged that the Sindh government was pressurising the home department to replace Mushtaq Jahangiri because he had refused to approve the report for release of Dr Asim.

Dr Asim Hussain was arrested on August 26 this year on charges of indulging in massive corruption and terror financing. He remained in detention of Rangers for 90 days and reportedly named names in corruption from the Sindh government.
