Supreme Court cancels schedule of local govt polls in Islamabad

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja heard the petition regarding the local bodies elections in the federal capital.

Justice Khawaja questioned why only the people of Islamabad being deprived of the local government polls.

The court asked the government to reply whether it is ready to hold the grassroot level elections in Islamabad.

He said the court required clear answers in writing. The learned justice observed that all other bills are being given priority in the Parliament except for the law on the local government elections.

Justice Khawaja further said that a bill relating to finance was just passed in Parliament. He said we cannot question Parliament but we can question the government.

He further said that the local polls have already been held in Balochistan as well as in Cantonment Boards, while the schedule for Sindh and Punjab local government polls have also been submitted.

The bench ordered the election commission to submit new schedule of the local government polls in Islamabad and adjourned the case till August 3.
