Suspended SSP Rao Anwar escapes attack, five attackers killed

KARACHI: Unknown assailants on Saturday targeted the convoy of suspended SSP Rao Anwar in Steel Town area, however Anwar remained unharmed during the attack, ARY News reported.

Our correspondent Shah Nawaz Shah told that Rao Anwar was going to visit the family of martyred DSP Fateh Muhammad for offering condolences.

While the convoy of suspended official was passing by Steel Town link road, unknown assailants hurled hand grenades and opened fire at the vehicles prompting counter fire by Anwar’s security squad.

The exchange of fire continued for some time and five of the assailants were gunned down.

Rao Anwar, however, remained fortunate enough to escape any harm.

Anwar had actively been involved in operations against banned outfits mostly in Malir, National Highway, Sohrab Goth, Kunwari Colony and other volatile neighborhoods of the megapolis.

Several miscreants linked with proscribed organizations have so far been killed in operations led by Anwar, while he has also faced assassination attempts and suicide attacks in the past.

He was suspended on Friday for ‘exceeding from powers and misusing authority’ soon after he held a controversial press talk leveling serious allegations against Muttahida Qaumi Movement, which were entirely turned down by the party.

In his exclusive word with ARY News, Rao Anwar told that the shootout is still ongoing while he is sitting inside an armored vehicle.

He told that the attackers were riding on three motorcycles and a car, while some of them fled the scene.
