US defense secy lauds Pakistan’s contributions in war on terror

RAWALPINDI/WASHINGTON: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday called on the United States (US) Defense Secretary Ashton Carter at the Pentagon and discussed Pakistan-US defense relations and regional security, said the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement.

According to the ISPR, the US defense secretary welcomed the delegation headed by the COAS and underlined strategic importance of Pak-US relations with shared history.

He emphasized that US values Pakistan and looks at its relations with it independent of all other countries.

Mr. Carter appreciated Pakistan’s contributions and sacrifices in fighting war on terror, and acknowledged effects of successful counter-terrorism operations which are opening opportunities for regional peace.

“US will play its part and fully support any effort of Pakistan in fighting terrorism and extremism, in any way,” he said. “We will continue to operate in a coordinated manner against this global menace.”

On the occasion, General Raheel Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s perspective of regional challenges.

He reiterated that backed by national consensus Pakistan is resolved to eliminate terrorism & extremism from its soil for good.
