Sanjay Dutt is set to reprise one of his most iconic roles as Ballu in Khalnayak Returns, a new film described as a fresh interpretation of the 1993 cult classic Khal Nayak.
The actor unveiled the project at an event in Mumbai, confirming that his banner Three Dimension Motion Pictures has partnered with producer Aksha Kamboj’s Aspect Entertainment to secure the rights for the sequel from filmmaker Subhash Ghai and his company Mukta Arts.
A brief teaser showcased at the event featured Dutt in a rugged new look, hinting at the return of the infamous anti-hero Ballu, a character that helped define 1990s Bollywood cinema.
Speaking at the launch, Dutt expressed gratitude to Ghai, who directed and produced the original film. “The journey of Khalnayak has been long, and without Subhash ji, it wouldn’t have been possible,” he said, adding that the veteran filmmaker would continue to be involved in the new project.
In a surprising revelation, Dutt shared that the idea for revisiting Khal Nayak first came to him during his time in jail. The actor recalled discussing the concept with fellow inmates when he was serving his jail term in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blast case and many of whom showed strong interest in seeing a sequel.
The original Khal Nayak also starred Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit.
