11 rape-slay incidents happened after Zainab’s murder: NA told

ISLAMABAD: A report of the Ministry of Human Rights on Monday apprised the National Assembly that at least 11 rape and slay incidents had taken place in the country after murder of minor girl Zainab, ARY News reported.

The report presented by, Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, further stated that about 5,312 women had been murdered in the last five years, out of them 1,548 cases were of honor killing. 45 instances of Wani were also reported, while 99 women were made victim of acid attack during these years.

The report of the ministry revealed that total 14,003 incidents of rape had been reported across the country. It said accused in the Zainab murder case had been executed, while 11 more such cases were pending now. It said six of the cases were reported in Punjab, three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two in Balochistan.

The ministry said one suspect in a rape-slay case in Punjab was arrested and his DNA report was awaited, while challan of four suspects were proven wrong. It added that suspects behind the heinous crimes in Balochistan and KP were also rounded up.

It should be noted that Zainab’s murder earlier this year shook the nation. She was kidnapped on January 4 and found from a garbage heap on January 9. Zainab’s autopsy report suggested that the minor was sexually assaulted before being strangulated to death.

The girl’s rape and murder had sparked widespread outrage across the country.

Imran Ali, who was the victim’s neighbour, was arrested on January 23 after his DNA sample matched the sample obtained from the crime scene following which he confessed raping at least nine girls including Zainab Ansari. Out of the seven rape and murder cases registered against Imran, the court has given its verdict in five.

In total, Ali has been sentenced to 21 counts of death, three life sentences and a cumulative 23 years in jail.
