11-year-old girl creates app that detects eye diseases via iPhone

An 11-year-old Indian girl broke the internet after developing an Artificial Intelligence-based application that detects eye diseases via iPhone.

According to the Indian news agency, Leena Rafeeq from Kerala was working on the application ‘Ogler Eye Scan’ since she was 10 years old. The “self-taught coder” shared her feat on LinkedIn. 

The girl studied different subjects including computer vision, algorithms, machine learning models, eye conditions and advanced levels of Apple iOS development for six months to create the application.

She claimed that her application can detect Arcus, Melanoma, Pterygium, and Cataracts.

Netizens lauded her achievements after her post went viral.

“It’s impressive to hear about your achievement of creating an AI mobile app that can diagnose potential eye diseases and conditions,” a user wrote. A second wrote, “You deserve a huge congrats, Leena. Such an awesome job at the age of 10.”

A LinkedIn user asked, “Great work! I was wondering could the app be a medical device, which needs to comply with the applicable medical device regulations?” Another stated, “Wow, that’s amazing! You have accomplished so much with your creation of Ogler EyeScan and I wish you the best of luck and some amazing app store reviews.”
