11th World Sleep Day being celebrated Globally today and here's why.

The Annual World Sleep Day is upon us and people are celebrating! This day is celebrated precisely to raise awareness on the necessity of proper sleep and the effects it has on everyday things like education, medicine, and driving. This year marks the 11th year of the annually held sleep day which started in 2007.

The event is organized by the World Sleep Day committee of World Sleep Day society to prevent the citizens of the world from sleeping disorders. It is acknowledged and celebrated by more than 70 countries globally and the #WorldSleepDay hashtag has been trending on twitter for the past three years running.

Living in this fast-paced world we often lack the most crucial aspect of our daily life and that is proper sleep. Scientists say that an average human being needs approximately 6-8 hours of sleep daily to function adequately. Lack of sleep enhances the risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Lack of proper sleep can also cause mood swings and lessen your capability to cope with stress. It can also affect your memory and other mental functions, making them chronically a part of your health. It is amazing how something so simple as sleep can make all the difference.

A study conducted by a US researcher named Allan Rechtschaffen in the 1980’s at the University of Chicago showed that given enough time, sleep deprivation can kill you.  The experiment was conducted on rats, who all died after 32 days of total sleep deprivation.

Lack of sleep can also result in accidents. A study shows that most traffic accidents occur because the driver fell asleep.A sleep-deprived brain can cause hallucinations and paranoia before delving into severe physical symptoms.

Sleep deprivation is a consequential deal and has to to be taken very seriously. A proper period of sleep acquired every day can enhance brain activity and result in a better and healthier lifestyle.
