'Airports across country face terror threat'

“There have been reports about increased threat to civilian aircraft from international terrorist groups including Al-Qaeda and the groups affiliated with it, like Al-Shabab, the Yemeni Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the Syrian Jabhat al-Nusra (JAN) terror group,” reads the letter issued by the authority.

“Explosives prepared in this manner might be smuggled into civilian airlines. Especially in airports in countries where security is low,” says the letter.

The letter further warns about some methods the terrorist may employ including the newly invented technique by Somalian Al-Shabab group, i.e. hiding Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Laptops.

A: Placing approximately 1 kg explosives into the computer after removing some components. In such a case, a laptop will not start which can help airport security stop the terrorist.

B: Placing a few hundred grams of pressed explosives in the form a sheet behind the laptop screen. There is a bit of free space in some models of laptops and would not require the terrorists to remove any component of the device.

“In such case detection at airports might be difficult,” says the letter.
