KARACHI: The anti-terrorism court has summoned owners of Baldia factory – that was set on fire by political activists in Karachi and subsequently over 250 lives lost in its wake– in the next hearing, ARY News reported.

The court also re-issued non-bailable arrest warrants for accused Hammad Siddiqui and other proclaimed offenders in the case.

The ATC had also previously ordered factory owners to turn up in the proceedings but they didn’t.

A month ago, German discount clothes retailer KiK had agreed to pay another $5.15 million in compensation to victims of Baldia factory fire victims.

The sum will come on top of the $1 million (890,000 euros) KiK paid out in late 2012 in the wake of the devastating fire at the Ali Enterprises factory in Karachi that killed at least 255 people, the company said.

“KiK has voluntarily taken on responsibility for those affected, because this aid was a real concern for us,” chief executive Patrick Zahn said in a statement published on the firm’s website on Friday.

Nearly 250 people burnt to death after a horrific blaze erupted in the factory in September, 2012. The government formed a JIT to thoroughly investigate the matter, which had later made startling revelations.

“The fire that engulfed had the factory was an outcome of a pre-planned scheme and that it was no accident,” revealed the JIT report. “The factory was set ablaze over non-payment of bhatta – protection money.”

Sources said the JIT report stated that MQM sector in-charge Rehman alias Bhola and Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC) in-charge Hammad Siddiqui had demanded Rs 200 million extortion from owners of the factory.
