Banners against Karachi Mayor placed outside KMC office

KARACHI: Banners against Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar were on Tuesday placed outside the office of the Karachi Municipal Corporation, ARY News reported.

The banners with were inscribed with phrases causing the Karachi Mayor of corruption and for embezzling the resources of the city. “Mayor Karachi is the ringleader of corrupt mafia,” read a banner placed outside the gates of the mayor’s office. “Corrupt Mayor is unacceptable,” read another.

Subsequently banners were also placed in support of Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra, who has defected to the Pak Sarzameen Party led by Mustafa Kamal. The defection comes a blow to the Mutahida Quami Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) which is embroiled in a tug of war with the PSP.

A rowdy session of the

city council held on Tuesday was adjourned within minutes as opposition members raised slogans and created a ruckus. The session was reportedly called to raise a no-confidence motion against the deputy mayor.

However, Waseem Akhtar denied that there was an attempt to bring a resolution against Vohra. Speaking to media outside the KMC office, he said that session of the city council was already scheduled and proceeding were held normally and even a resolution was passed as per the agenda.

He said the city council would have welcomed any resolution brought by the opposition parties before the session fell into disarray and was eventually prorogued. It is not known when the next session of the city council will be held.
