Case filed against Nehal Hashmi over threatening speech

KARACHI: A case has been filed against former Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) senator Nehal Hashmi for threatening speech against the judiciary and members of the Joint Investigation Team probing the family of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case.

The case under application 112/17 was filed at the Bahadurabad Police station by Station House Officer (SHO) Khushnood Javed.

Hashmi has been booked under Section 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) , 228 ( Intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding), and 189 (Threat of injury to public, servant) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The application states that Hashmi had a hostile attitude and openly threatened esteemed members of the judiciary and national institutions.

Hashmi is set to reappear in the Supreme Court on Monday July 5 with an written explanation for his slanderous rant during a PML-N worker’s event on Yaum-e-Takbeer. The apex court has also issued a contempt of court notice against Hashmi.

The Attorney General has been appointed as prosecutor in the case and tasked to gather evidence against Hashmi. Earlier, the AG wrote to the advocate general in Sindh to book Hashmi in the case.

Hashmi also earned the apex court who said that such overt threats are issued by terrorists and the ‘Sicilian Mafia’. The SC judge remarked that they are been issued threats but will be undeterred in the Panama Papers case.

PML-N has suspended the membership of Hashmi and he was resigned from his Senate seat. PM Nawaz Sharif also expressed disappointment over his remarks, which were immediately disowned by party activists.
