CHILAS: Three police personnel were martyred and four others, including a DSP, were injured in a gun attack on a police vehicle in the Thor area of Chilas, in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, on Monday.

According to a government spokesperson, unidentified armed assailants opened fire on the police mobile, resulting in the deaths of three officials at the scene.

A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was also among the injured and was shifted to a hospital along with other injured personnel for medical treatment.

Police and rescue teams rushed to the site soon after the incident, while a heavy contingent of security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

Authorities said an investigation into the attack is underway.

Caretaker Interior Minister Sajid Ali Baig strongly condemned the incident, calling the attack a tragic and unacceptable act of terrorism.

Separate incident in Hangu

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, three policemen were injured in a firing incident while guarding a polio vaccination team in the Hangu district.

According to SHO Mehmood Alam, the attack occurred in the Chhapri Wazeeran area. The injured officers were shifted to a hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, additional police contingents were deployed, and the area was cordoned off.

Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan remain the only countries where polio is endemic, with militants often targeting vaccination teams and their security escorts.

Pakistan recently launched its second nationwide anti-polio campaign of 2026.

MOSCOW: Russia is ready to take in Iran’s enriched uranium as part of a future peace deal with the United States, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Failed talks between Iran and the United States over the weekend dashed hopes of a swift deal to permanently end the war that has killed thousands and thrown the global economy into turmoil since it began in late February.

Russia, which possesses the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, has repeatedly offered to host Iran’s enriched uranium as part of any peace deal.

“This proposal was voiced by President Putin in contacts with both the United States and regional states. The offer still stands, but has not been acted upon,” the Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday in response to a question by AFP.

The Kremlin also criticised Trump’s threat to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway that has been at a standstill since the US and Israel began striking Iran in late February.

“Such actions will likely continue to negatively impact the international market,” Peskov said.

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed deputy commissioners of Karachi to fill the disability quota job vacancies within two months, ARY News reported.

As per details, the issue of failure to recruit under the disability quota across all districts of the city came before SHC for hearing.

According to the petitioner’s counsel, more than 3,000 positions remain vacant in government departments across Karachi.

The petition stated that educated persons with disabilities are not being provided government employment opportunities.

The lawyer also pointed out that, under the law, a five per cent quota is reserved for persons with disabilities in public sector jobs.

After the arguments, the Sindh High Court directed deputy commissioners to fill all vacant positions within two months.

The court further ordered that all vacancies reserved under the disability quota must be filled. Later, a two-member constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court disposed of the petitions after issuing the directives.

Apple has reportedly removed South Lebanon from Apple Maps, seemingly to support the Israeli invasion. Users have noticed that most village and town labels in South Lebanon are now missing, leaving the region appearing blank.

However, according to Wired, Apple has stated that claims about villages and towns in southern Lebanon being removed from Apple Maps are inaccurate. According to the company, those locations were never included in the service in the first place. This response comes after online users accused Apple of removing them from its services during the ongoing conflict.

On X (formerly Twitter), posts show these labels gone across the south, while nearby Israel and Syria still display their place names. Google Maps, however, still shows the markers, making this discrepancy more conspicuous.

Apple has removed Lebanese village names in Southern Lebanon.

As Israel invades, they are already setting the state to justify occupation.

I’ve never seen something like this. pic.twitter.com/gKRcsmUjO3

— Ethan Levins (@EthanLevins2) April 12, 2026

Given the ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, erasing place names might be interpreted as a political statement. Israeli ministers have even discussed annexation up to the Litani River. This “virtual depopulation” on Job’s Mob’s map could be seen as aiding that narrative.

It’s possible that Apple’s usual software issues, particularly in the mapping department, are to blame.

However, if a flawed data update occurred at the worst possible moment, that could explain the situation. Some sources suggest that there has been a covert cyberattack targeting labels and metadata in Apple Maps.

Apple cannot claim that its maps are neutral when people rely on them for navigation, assistance, and basic situational awareness. If borders and towns begin disappearing from a major platform, the real-world consequences can become serious very quickly.

A recent blog post indicates that Apple Maps has consistently shown sparse information in parts of South Lebanon, and this lack of detail may not be a new issue. It should be relatively easy to address, raising the question of why Apple has allowed this to happen or why it has not yet been corrected.

ISTANBUL: Israel “cannot live without an enemy” and its government is now trying to portray Turkey as one, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Monday.

Tensions between Turkey and Israel have steadily escalated since the Gaza war erupted following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack.

The dispute entered a new phase over the weekend after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned his US counterpart Donald Trump of “possible provocations and sabotage” that could jeopardise an initial ceasefire arrangement in the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Saturday that Israel would continue to confront Tehran and its regional allies.

“After Iran, Israel cannot live without an enemy,” Fidan said in a televised interview with the state‑run Anadolu news agency.

“We see that not only Netanyahu’s administration but also some figures in the opposition — though not all — are seeking to declare Turkey the new enemy,” he said.

“This is a new development in Israel… turning into a state strategy,” he added.

TYRE: Wrapped in bloodied bandages, Aline Saeed, seven, barely survived the Israeli strike on her home in south Lebanon last week. She was there to bury her father as hopes of ‌a truce spread across the region, but a new strike killed her infant sister and other relatives.

The strike on the Saeed family home in the village of Srifa took place on Wednesday, the first day of a U.S.-Iran ceasefire that many in Lebanon hoped would apply to their country, too. Instead, Israeli strikes killed more than 350 across Lebanon and left the Saeed family with four more relatives to bury.

“They said it was a ceasefire. Like all these people, we went up to the village. We went to the casket to read the prayers and walk home… suddenly we felt like a storm was landing right on us,” said Nasser Saeed, Aline’s 64-year-old grandfather, who also survived.

On Sunday, he joined other relatives in the southern port city of Tyre to pick up the bodies wrapped in green cloth. One of them, a fraction the size of the rest, contained his granddaughter Taleen, Aline’s sister.

She had not yet turned two.

With bandages to his head and right hand and scratches on his face, Saeed mourned in silence as the women around him turned their faces up to the sky and screamed in agony.

The Israeli military said that it did not have enough details to look into the incident, adding that it takes measures to reduce harm to civilians in its strikes against Hezbollah militants.

TALEEN ‘BORN IN WAR AND DIED IN WAR’

The latest war in Lebanon began on March 2, when Lebanese armed group Hezbollah fired onto Israeli positions in support of its patron Iran.

Israel has since escalated its air and ground campaign ‌in the country where its operations have killed more than 2,000 people, including 165 children and nearly 250 women.
Pope Leo on Sunday said how close he felt to the “beloved Lebanese people” and called for a ceasefire.

In his weekly address to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square the pope said there was “a moral obligation to protect the civilian population from the horrific effects of war.”

Wednesday was one of the deadliest days in Lebanon’s recent history.

“This isn’t humanity. This is a war crime,” Saeed told Reuters at the hospital where Aline’s mother, Ghinwa, was still being treated.

“Where are the human rights? If a child – a child! – is wounded in Israel, the whole world jumps up. Are we not people? Are we not humans? We’re like them!” he said.

Taleen was born in 2024, in the last round of fierce clashes between Hezbollah and Israel.

“She was born in the war and died in the war,” said Mohammed Nazzal, Ghinwa’s father.

FIERCE BOMBARDMENT CONTINUES

Iran wants a ceasefire for Lebanon as part of talks with the United States, which concluded on Sunday without a breakthrough. But Israel wants to pursue talks with Lebanese officials through a separate track.

Heavy bombardment on Lebanon has continued, with nearly 100 people killed on Saturday.

Dr. Abbas Attiyeh, head of emergency operations at Tyre’s Jabal Amel hospital, said last week’s bombardment was one of the heaviest in recent years and many of the patients arriving at his hospital were children.

“The challenges we’re facing now are the numbers of wounded that come at the same time, within the same 30 minutes or hour,” Attiyeh told Reuters.

Punjab government has introduced Pakistan’s first-ever official government-run mortuary transport service to facilitate the free transportation of deceased individuals.

The service was inaugurated in Punjab by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who announced that it will provide dignified and cost-free govt mortuary transport service for bereaved families.

In the initial phase, the facility will be available at government hospitals in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. The Punjab chief minister said the service will be expanded to all tehsils across Punjab by June, with dedicated ambulances deployed in each area.

During the launch ceremony, Maryam Nawaz inspected the vehicles and handed over keys to rescue personnel, stating that it is unacceptable for grieving families to be charged high fares for transporting bodies.

She instructed rescue staff to ensure that no payments are taken under any circumstances for mortuary transport services.

Emphasising the need for compassion, the Punjab chief minister also directed authorities to provide counselling and emotional support to bereaved families.

Citizens will be able to access the service free of charge by dialling 1122 for transportation from hospitals to homes.

According to an official briefing, hospitals will maintain 24-hour trained staff and dedicated counters to manage the service, which will be monitored through a smart rescue and dispatch system.

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday granted conditional permission for a ninth-grade student to appear in forthcoming examinations amid June-July school fee dispute.

As per details, family of the student moved court against the administration of private school in Karachi concerning the dispute of early demand for June and July fees.

According to the petitioner’s counsel, the school administration in Karachi issued fee challans for June and July in advance, contrary to established procedures.

The lawyer argued that, as per the Education Department’s circular, fees for June and July are meant to be collected during April and May. Despite complaints being lodged with the relevant authorities regarding the premature fee demand, no action was taken, the counsel added.

After hearing the initial arguments, the SHC ordered that the student be permitted to sit the examination without any hindrance, while also directing that the student’s result should be withheld until further proceedings in the case.

The court also sought responses from the Advocate General of Sindh and other relevant parties, directing them to submit their replies at the next hearing.

Earlier in 2024, the Sindh government restrained private schools from charging extra fees beyond admission and monthly tuition fees.

According to details, the Directorate of Private Institutions issued a notification prohibiting private schools from charging additional fees. According to the notification, private schools can only charge admission and monthly tuition fees.

SYDNEY: Australia on Monday said a woman would lead its army for the first time in history, as part of a reshuffle of the country’s defense force leadership.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, the current chief ‌of joint capabilities, will become chief of army in July, the government said in a statement. She will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.

Coyle’s appointment comes as Australia’s military seeks to boost the number of female officers in its ranks. It faces a wave of allegations of systematic sexual harassment and discrimination.

“From July, we will have the first ever female chief of army in the Australian Army’s 125-year history,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement.

Defense Minister Richard Marles called Coyle’s appointment a “deeply historic moment.”

“As Susan said to me, you cannot be what you cannot see,” he said.

“Susan’s achievement will be deeply significant to women who are serving in the Australian Defence Force today and women who are thinking about serving in the Australian Defence Force in the future.”

Coyle, ‌55, enlisted in the military in 1987 and has held a number of senior command roles. She will be the first woman to lead any service branch of the military, Marles said.

Women currently make up around 21% of the Australian Defense Force (ADF) and 18.5% of senior leadership roles. The ADF has set a target of 25% of overall participation for women by 2030.

Last October, a class action lawsuit was filed against the ADF alleging it failed to protect thousands of female officers from systematic sexual assault, harassment and discrimination.

The government on Monday also appointed Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current chief of the navy, as the head of the ADF, succeeding Admiral David Johnston.

The current deputy chief of the Navy, Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley, will replace Hammond as head of the branch.

BEIJING: China called for “unimpeded” navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a day after US President Donald Trump threatened to blockade the crucial waterway.

“The Strait of Hormuz is an important international trade route for goods and energy, and maintaining its security, stability, and unimpeded flow is in the common interest of the international community,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a news conference.

Russia’s foreign minister is due to visit China this week, Beijing said, as the two sides hope to boost cooperation.

“At the invitation of … (China’s top diplomat) Wang Yi, Russia’s foreign minister （Sergei) Lavrov will pay an official visit to China from April 14 to 15,” Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a news conference.

The US military has said it will blockade all Iranian Gulf ports on Monday at 1400 GMT, effectively seizing control of maritime traffic in the critical Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway through which a fifth of the global oil supply passes.

“The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” US Central Command said in a post on X, adding the United States would “not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports”.
