CJP refuses to accept donations of man with mental disorder

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar refused to accept the donations for the dam fund by a person who according to his wife has been suffering from a mental disorder.

Few days earlier, a man named Sheikh Shahid donated his property worth Rs80 million to the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand Dams Fund.

On Sunday, the wife and three sons of the donor approached the Lahore registry of the apex court, complaining that Mr Shahid had donated the property without family’s consent.

Owing to his disturbed mental state, Mr Shahid took the step of donating the property for the fund without asking any family member, they added.

To which, Justice Nisar told the family that their property would not be accepted as a donation for the dam fund, because under the Sharia law, it was the right of the heirs.

The top judge then ordered the authorities concerned to conduct medical examination of Mr Shahid and submit a report to him.

It is pertinent to mention that the National Assembly was informed on November 9 that Rs7.5 billion have been deposited in the Supreme Court-created Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dams Fund, so far.

Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar told the lower house of Parliament that out of the total amount, Rs804 million were contributed by people living abroad.

Donate for dam fund

The Fund has been established by the SBP on the directions of the Supreme Court. All the commercial and micro-finance banks, and field offices of SBP Banking Services Corporation have opened the Fund account to receive donations in cash, and through cheques, pay orders and demand drafts at all their branches across the country.

The donors can also make online donations to the Fund through internet banking, automatic teller machines (ATM) and other alternate delivery channels (ADC) using IBAN of their respective bank. The banks have sent the IBANs of the Fund account to their clients through SMS alerts, while the bank-wise list of IBANs is also available at the SBP’s web page.

Citizens can also donate Rs10 to the CJP’s dam fund by typing “dam” and sending the SMS to 8000 which will deduct the amount from the phone’s credit.

The donations can also be made through credit / debit cards from anywhere in the world by clicking the “Online collections for Supreme Court Diamer Bhasha & Mohamand Dams Fund” on the SBP’s web page.

The overseas Pakistanis having PKR accounts in Pakistan can also make donations in the Fund through the internet banking facility of their respective banks.
