Court awards 14-year jail term to man over acid attack in Karachi

KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court on Thursday handed a man 14 years’ jail sentence for hurling acid at a woman after she refused his proposal of marriage, ARY News reported.

The court found accused Danish guilty of the offence and awarded him 14 years imprisonment and also ordered him to pay Rs. 8,00,000 Diyat to the victim of the attack.

In case of non-payment of diyat, the convict will undergo further imprisonment, the court said in its verdict.

The ATC Judge however acquitted three other accused Malik Qurban, Abdul Rahim and Mohammad Ashraf.

According to police, the complainant had identified Danish in an identification parade.

The FIR was registered against the accused at Shah Latif police station in year 2015.

Acid Attacks

Acid attack is a form of violent assault defined as the act of throwing acid or a harmful substance onto the body of another with the intention to disfigure, maim, torture, or kill. Mostly the women remain the victims of attackers who usually throw harmful liquids at faces of their victims, to disfigure them.

The acid attacks are reported in many parts of the world, though more likely in developing countries. These attacks occur all over the world but they are most common in South Asian countries Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
