A tragic incident unfolded during a domestic cricket match in Muradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, India, when fast bowler Ahmer Khan’s condition deteriorated and he died on the field just after delivering the last ball of the tournament.
According to the Indian media, the incident happened at the Bilari’s sugar mill ground during a match organised by the Uttar Pradesh Veterans Cricket Association.
Reports suggest that the match was played between the domestic teams, Muradabad and Sambhal teams yesterday. Muradabad had batted first, setting a target for Sambhal to chase.
Sambhal team needed 14 runs off the final four balls. Ahmer Khan bowled a dramatic last over that led his side to an 11-run victory.
As soon as he completed his final delivery, the bowler reportedly began struggling to breathe and collapsed on the ground. Teammates and a doctor present at the venue rushed to assist him and performed CPR before he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Doctors declared him dead on arrival to the hospital. After the incident there was a pall of grief over the ground and the joy of victory turned to shock and sorrow.
Ahmar Khan, described as an experienced local player, had been active in veterans’ cricket for several years. Tournament organisers expressed deep condolences over his death.
