ECP meeting underway to discuss election related court verdicts

ISLAMABAD: A crucial meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan has been underway to discuss the court decisions with regard to nomination forms and delimitation.

The meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Muhammad Raza on Saturday being attended by the four members of the election commission.

Important decisions are expected in the meeting with regard to general elections scheduled to be held on July 25, this year.

ECP secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad has said that the Commission has received the Lahore High Court judgement with regard to nomination forms.

The ECP meeting will decide whether to produce a new form or to amend in the existing one as per the directives of the court, ECP secretary Babar Yaqoob said.

The court has issued various directives to the election commission, the secretary said.

The ECP meeting will also consider over the court decisions with regard to the delimitation of constituencies, Yaqoob further said.

On a question regarding possible delay in the election schedule, secretary ECP said that “It will be premature to say something about it. The meeting will discuss the matter.”

The Lahore HIgh Court on Friday ruled that the nomination form to be submitted by candidates for upcoming general elections does not include mandatory information and declarations as required from the aspiring lawmakers by the Constitution and law.

Moreover, the Balochistan High Court on Friday declared delimitation of eight provincial electoral constituencies in Quetta as null and void ordering the ECP to re-conduct delimitation in view of apprehensions and reservations of the political parties.
