102 seminaries sealed for fanning sectarianism, NA told

Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan told this to lawmakers in a written reply during the question hour session. The question pertaining to seminaries was submitted by the PPP MNA Shahida Rehmani.

The minister told the House that the government has shut 87 madrassas in Sindh and 13 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and two seminaries have been sealed in Punjab. He added that number of students at Punjab seminaries were found to have links with banned outfits. He further told that 190 seminaries have been identified which received funds from abroad.

He also informed the lawmakers that 1,961 suspects have been arrested and 1,893 cases filed against clerics in an ongoing crackdown on hate speeches. Of these, 271 have been convicted.

He detailed that as many as 7,000 cases have been filed and 6,855 alleged hate-preachers arrested. Of them, 1,482 have been convicted of hatemongering on loudspeakers.
