2,500 cameras to monitor population of 20 mln in Karachi, says IGP Khawaja

KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General Police (IGP) A.D. Khowaja on Thursday said that the criminal activities in the city with a population of over 20 million people are being combed through 2,500 cameras.

Addressing a passing out parade of the Eaglet Course here, Khowaja said the police force managed to arrest as many as 200 street criminals in last 15 days, despite limited resources.

He stressed for a comprehensive strategy to eliminate street crimes in the city.

On the occasion, the police chief maintained that the police personnel are not personal employees of anyone and they should utilize the powers which they have been granted to curb the terrorism and street crimes.

He also discussed the extrajudicial killing of 27-year-old Naqeebullah Mehsud from South Waziristan and said the culprits would be brought to justice like ordinary criminals.

Coming on illegal recruitment in police department, the provincial police chief said that those personnel were terminated in a bid to improve policing in the city.

He said around 500 constables were later re-inducted in the police force.
