A look to newly appointed COAS Gen. Raheel Sharif
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is the four-star rank appointment in the Pakistan Army. It is the most prestigious and esteemed post of the Army. History reveals that this post has been vested with extreme powers because of frequent takeovers in the country.
The appointment of COAS is conducted by the President of Pakistan while Prime Minster sent the summary for the selection.
The appointment period of the post is three years but it can be extended on the orders granted by the President on recommendation from Prime Minister.
Gen. Raheel Sharif has been appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff by Prime Minister Mian Moahmmad Nawaz Sharif.
Gen. Raheel Sharif will take charge from outgoing Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on November 29 (Friday) at a ceremony to be held at GHQ‚ Rawalpindi.
He will be 15th army chief of Pakistan.

He was born on June 16, 1956 in Quetta. He is married having two sons and a daughter.
Raheel Sharif got his early academic education from Government College Lahore and later enrolled in the Pakistan Military Academy.
Soon after his graduation, Sharif was commissioned in 1976 in the battle hardened and renowned 6th battalion The Frontier Force Regiment.
He performed his duties in Gilgit in an infantry brigade and also served as adjutant of Pakistan Military Academy.
Gen Rtd. Pervaiz Musharraf handed him command of the 11th Infantry Division in Lahore.
He served as the General Officer Commanding of an infantry division and the Commandant of the Pakistan Military Academy.
Later he performed as the Corps Commander for two years before and then appointed as the Inspector General Training and Evaluation.
Today (November 27), he has been appointed for the post of Chief of Army Staff.
