He recently visited the drought affected regions of the Indian state faced with one of the worst water crisis when he came across two of the most adversely affected villages, Tal and Koregaon in Sitara district when he made this decision.
The Satyamev Jayate star has joined the bandwagon after actors Nana Patekar and Akshay Kumar also supported and adopted many drought affected villages.
The Maharashtra government has started a program Jal Yukta Shivar which aims to water harvesting techniques including construction of ponds.
Akshay Kumar had generously donated 5 million rupees toward the state-led initiative. Nana Patekar has distributed cheques among widows of farmers who have committed suicide over the water crisis and diverting relief towards the area.
Aamir Khan is also closely working with his NGO, Paani Foundation, to bring relief to over 120 villages in the drought-hit region. He asserted that people should join hands and ensure success of these programs launched by the government. Aamir also launched a water management and decentralization initiative, the Satyamev Jayte Water Cup.
“The water issue in Maharashtra is worsening every passing day. To tackle this problem permanently, we have to give preference to the success of Jal Yukta Shivar and similar projects,” he said recently while addressing a seminar.
It may be mentioned that Aamir Khan had adopted villages of Kutch in Gujarat after the worst earthquake 2001. Recently, he also visited Beed from Aurangabad which is one of the three worst affected districts in Maharashtra.
He applauded the efforts the state government saying that “Arresting rain water and conserving every drop are the only options to fight droughts and drought-like situations in the long run.”
