Accountability court indicts ex-PM Raja Pervaiz in GEPCO scam
LAHORE: An accountability court on Tuesday here indicted former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in a reference related to illegal recruitment in the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO).
Syed Najamul Hassan Bukhari of the accountability court heard a reference filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against former premier.
During the proceedings today, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf’s counsel argued that reference copies were not provided to his client despite the court orders.
To which, the judge queried the motive behind requesting for time to file a reply in the case for over six months if he believed there were no evidences of wrongdoing against his client.
According to the NAB reference, Ashraf had recruited as many as 437 people without taking merit into consideration.
The court directed the prosecution to produce its witnesses for deposition in the next hearing while adjourning the case till October 7.
Following the court’s ruling, Ashraf spoke to the media and rejected all charges against him.
It merits to mention here that Ashraf has also been indicted by another accountability court in Islamabad in the rental power case.
Ashraf is accused of misusing his authority during his tenure as minister to get approval from the Economic Coordination Committee for an increase in the down-payment to the rental power companies from seven per cent to 14 per cent, amounting to about Rs22 billion.
