Accountability Court seeks extension of deadline in cases against Sharifs

ISLAMABAD: The accountability court judge has written to the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan in order to seek extension in the deadline to conclude corruption references against the Sharif family. 

The accountability court – II judge Arshad Malik approached the apex court for extension in deadline to wrap up Flagship and Al-Aziziz references against the former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, will conduct a hearing on August 27 with regard to extension in deadline of references.

Previously, accountability court- IV judge Muhammad Bashir had been given four extensions during the case hearing of graft cases.

On July 10, the latest extension of six weeks was granted to the accountability court which has also been ended.

An accountability court, in Avenfield corruption reference, awarded 10 years prison term to the PML-N supreme leader, while his daughter Maryam and her spouse Capt. Safdar were handed seven years’ and one year’s prison term, respectively.

Judge Muhammad Bashir ordered forfeiture of their properties in the Avenfield Apartments and Park Lane of London. He imposed a fine of £8 million (approximately Rs1,292m) on the former premier and £2 million (approximately Rs323m) on his daughter.

Besides, three convicts were awarded an additional one-year imprisonment, which will run concurrently for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
